Driving Game Audio Forward: A Conversation with Adam Boyd MPSE How did you initially get started in audio post production? AB: When we were kids, my younger sister got a portable cassette deck for her birthday. I was fascinated by the recording and playback process and ended up stealing it from her when I noticed she wasn't using it that much. I had to take it apart and fix loose bands and rollers a few times, and I think that gave me an appreciation for the technical aspects of the device as well. Eventually, I took up music, and like so many of us of my generation, found sound design through Star Wars and the work of Ben Burtt. I went to film school after high school and was the only one who cared enough about sound to figure out how to work the ancient mag dubbers and sync blocks. What were some of the early challenges you faced in your career, and how did you overcome them? dam Boyd MPSE is a leading figure in sound design and editing, celebrated for his innovative contributions to the industry. He co-developed Crankcase Audio's REV with John Twigg, pioneering a middleware system that revolutionized vehicle engine sound modeling in video games. REV uses highly accurate spectral analysis and granular synthesis to create authentic and dynamic engine sounds, available both as a standalone software package and a Wwise plugin. This system has set new standards in vehicle sound design, offering game developers unparalleled flexibility and efficiency. Adam also co-founded Rebound Sound Company with Mikael Frithiof, an audio co-development firm based in Los Angeles. In just four years, Rebound has grown from a small two-person operation to a global enterprise with over 20 employees and facilities in the US, Poland, and Sweden. The company has quickly earned a reputation for excellence in sound design, voice recording, and technical implementation. Adam's work has earned him 11 nominations and 3 wins at the prestigious MPSE Golden Reel Awards. A BY GARRETT MONTGOMERY MPSE 30 M PS E . O R G
