One of the unique features of the Script Excel file is that it is a "living" document. This means that it can be changed by a separate computer if the file is in a shared folder, and updated in XenoVox with one click. This gives it the ability to get changes to the talent quickly, among other things. Recording multiple takes and marking selects, alts, and other designations, is quick and intuitive. At this point, it would be good to point out that while all functions can be clicked with a mouse, single keystroke shortcuts are available for most functions. These can keep your hands on the keyboard, which for me relieves hand strain and can speed up entries. The recording function can handle as many inputs as your hardware has available. I tested this with an Avid HD Native and a M-Audio 192/4. The inputs on my Avid were more than the mics I have to work with. There is routing for talkback and external timecode. Internal timecode can also be used to create a time-of-day stamp. Prerecorded lines can be played in a feature that they call Actual Dialogue Prompting (ADP). This can be configured several ways, single or multiple actors recording and any number of prerecorded lines. Recordings don't need to be recorded in XenoVox to use its organization tools. Files can be imported in a couple of ways to synchronize to the Excel file naming nomenclature. This would be a good time to cover editing in XenoVox. As I stated earlier, XenoVox is not an editor. Since it is a sample-based program, it pairs well with Sony's Sound Forge. You can open single or multiple takes to edit. For Sound Forge, as tested, double clicking will open Sound Forge for editing (If it is selected as your sample editor in audio setup). After editing, saving the clip will send it back to XenoVox seamlessly, even updating the version ID. For disk-based editors "Exporting has options to export to subfolders, status subfolders, remove old files, etc. One advantage of the Export and Publish function is that you can, on a second (or more) export or publish, copy only the new files changed. This saves time." XenoVox main page with configurable windows.
