M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 145 I've crushed or destroyed cars, houses, planes, cargo containers, pianos, etc., and unfortunately, a fair number of microphones in the process. I've been in (and fortunately able to leave) San Quentin, Alcatraz, Folsom, and Statesville prisons, including in the middle of a "staged" riot with prisoners at Statesville for the film Weeds. One of the most memorable and unexpected things I have experienced was a great moment when I went up to record Anthony Hopkins for the film Bad Company. He was at his house somewhere near Malibu overlooking the ocean, and a total gentleman as you would imagine, with that beautiful voice, accent, everything. We walked inside, and I commented, "Oh, my God, that's a beautiful piano." He had a Bosendorfer in his house. And he asked, "Oh, do you play?" And I said, "Well, no, I'm a guitar player, but I can appreciate a beautiful instrument." So, we do our recording, and then on the way out, he said, "I'll play you a little something if you want to hear it." I said, "Oh, absolutely!" He played a piece for me on his Bosendorfer and, once again, I listened. It was just one of those amazing moments where you think, this really is a pretty cool job! "I think what makes me, and keeps me still interested in what I do after all this time, is the combination of all those influences that I grew up with: the innate curiosity of how things work coupled with a fascination with both image and sound." John in front of Russian MI-26 helicopter recorded at Kiskunlachaza, an abandoned Russian Air Forcebase south of Budapest. 6/25/12. A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
