I'm just finishing the Quebec feature Mademoiselle Bottine, then on to the Nat Geo documentary Blink, and will end the summer mixing the final for The Collaboration. Hoping everyone survived these past few months." James Ridgley CAS reporting in. I recently worked on a wonderful feature film, A Blind Bargain, with Crispin Glover, and was able to reunite with old friends and colleagues on this one. I'm happy to have boom operator Ray Gaona—who is also an excellent production sound mixer—on board. I also recorded pickups for the feature American Solitaire. Besides that, I am in post-production on two of my own feature films which I have written, directed, produced, and edited. Wishing everyone well, and here's to keeping production in Los Angeles! Philip Perkins CAS is mixing the docs QUBA!, Bird Woman, and Cell Atlas for PBS et al., and is grateful to be busy after a seriously slow period. Branko Neskov CAS shares: "The first half of my year has been very busy, but full of fascinating experiences as I've had the privilege of serving as re-recording mixer on many projects. At my Lisbon studio, Loudness Films, I worked on the dialogue pre-mix for Enforcados, a Brazilian film directed by Fernando Coimbra, and completed the mix alongside my colleague Ricardo Cutz, who also handled all the sound design. I also traveled to Mumbai, India, to mix a six-episode Netflix series IC-814, based on the true story of the 1999 Kandahar hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha. Returning to Lisbon, I spent three weeks mixing Alain Guiraudie's film Misericorde, which premiered at Cannes. I mixed On Falling, directed by Laura Carreira, on a three-week schedule and undertook another three-week project for the film Saligia, directed by Petar Ristovski. This was an extremely demanding film with sound design by Ivan Neskov. I hope everyone is doing well!" Karol Urban CAS MPSE completed the mix on the feature documentary In a Wintry Season, which debuted at Krakow Film Festival, as well as the short Lockdown Romance, which debuted at the Green Jack Film Festival. She is also currently working on an Apple+ series, as well as mixing a feature art house thriller and a horror short for independent directors. Mathew Waters CAS and Daniel Vasquez V. CAS recently finished mixing the sound of UNO, a Colombian feature film by Clover Studios. BEEN THERE DONE THAT & THE LIGHTER SIDE (L-R): Sound mixer Ken Ishii CAS, boom operator CAS Associate Peter Deutscher, sound utility Ethan Goldberger, and sound trainee Jonathan Pinera on the last day of shooting Zero Day, Netflix's upcoming limited series, starring Robert De Niro and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter (of Homeland fame). Dave Winston CAS reports in on a funny encounter. "I was hired to record sound for an augmented reality/virtual reality convention display that, among other scenes, has a sequence of riding a bike in a forest. To make it sound as real as possible (and stay in budget), I captured audio using a pair of head-worn Sonic Studios DSM binaural mics recorded into a small Sony DAT Walkman. The mics were designed to be mounted on a pair of glasses. I got a pair that looked like old shop class glasses. Then, anticipating some wind noise, I wrapped the mics in some light foam, so they looked like little pom-poms hanging off my glasses. To accommodate my headphones, I obtained a medical helmet used by people who have had brain injuries. This allowed me to monitor properly. I wired everything up and put the recorder in a fanny pack. I rode up and down a trail in a Philadelphia park, making a few laps, and getting weird looks from just about everyone because of my getup. When I was done, I rolled back to the parking lot and began disassembling my gear when I saw a beautiful young woman looking at me. She smiled at me, and I smiled back. Then she stepped up to me and said, as one would when speaking to a very young child, "Are you having fun riding your bicycle in the park today? You are very brave to be riding your bicycle all by yourself. Is someone coming to pick you up? Would you like me to wait with you until they get here? You should be very proud of yourself riding a big-boy bicycle like that out here." From NBCUniversal StudioPost In the Hitchcock Theater, Frank Montano CAS and Bill Meadows have been busy on restoration projects for Universal classics such as The Wiz, Coal Miner's Daughter, and Out of Africa. On Mix 1, Mark Fleming CAS and Myron Nettinga have been busy on both NBC's St. Denis Medical and Peacock's Fight Night. On Mix 2, Andy Daddario and Brian Dinkins teamed up to work on Teacup for the remainder of the summer. On Mix A, John Cook CAS and Ben Wilkins have been working on A Classic Spy, while John Cook and Ben Cook CAS (no relation) have been working on The Old Man. This will wrap out John Cook's career on Mix A before moving into his new stage! Finally, on Mix B, we're happy to have Andy King and Jon Mete with us on the lot while they mix Netflix's Mr. Throwback.
