DGA African American Steering Committee presents: A Tribute to Director Robert Townsend Please join us for an evening of insightful conversation with Director Robert Townsend, moderated by Director Gina Prince-Bythewood. The event will include notable industry guest speakers who have worked with Townsend and have been influenced by his work including: Directors Cord Jefferson and Christopher Storer; Designer Ruth E. Carter, Actors Hawthorne James, Bobby McGee, Joseph Sikora, Recoe Walker and Damon Wayans; Cinematographer Bill Dill; Composer Stephen James Taylor; and more... A multifaceted icon, Director, Writer, Actor, Producer and Comedian Robert Townsend reshaped the indie film scene when with a few credit cards and a dream, he brought to life the sensation Hollywood Shuffle in 1987. However, Townsend isn't just about making movies; he's about making movements, from lighting up HBO with Robert Townsend's Partners in Crime to directing MTV's beat-pumping Carmen: A Hip Hopera. He also co- wrote and directed the critical and cultural hits The Five Heartbeats and Holiday Heart. His innovative spirit set precedents for superhero films with Meteor Man. His dedication to tackling various topics, from historical dramas to comedy fantasies, demonstrates his fearless approach to storytelling. His more recent directorial credits include episodes of Netflix hits like Kaleidoscope and The Best Man: The Final Chapters. More than just films and shows, Townsend's true legacy is his fearless storytelling, commitment to diversity, and the heart he puts into mentoring the next generation. With a career that's anything but linear, he continues to be an unstoppable force of creativity and influence in Tinseltown, forever changing the game with his boundless imagination and impactful contributions.
