www.postmagazine.com 4 POST MAY/JUNE 2024 EDITOR'S NOTE ost's "Music Video" issue is one that I really look forward to each year. While we cover music videos regularly, in this issue we really get into it, with a look at a dozen releas- es from both established artists and up-and-comers. Music videos are unique productions in that the creatives making them often wear many hats. It's quite common for a director to also serve as DP, editor and even colorist. The project on our cover — Kenzie's Close to You — featuring ASTN — was literally shot in 20 minutes. That's because the LA-based directing duo MOM (Ray Larkin and Matt Plaxco) were in charge of creating four videos for the artist on that day, and Close to You was the last of them. Plaxco completed the grade using Blackmagic Design's Resolve. MOM was also in charge of shooting still photography for Kenzie, which Post ultimately used on our front page. Filmmaker Alex Morgan directed, lit, shot, edited and colored The Cold Stares' Coming Home video. Shot over two days, the video features the band performing in a historic barn, as well as imagery of rural Kentucky, where they're from. Morgan secured the location for the shoot, and then used Adobe Premiere to complete the project. The production and post for each music video tells its own unique story, and for some, the experience of handling so many facets of the process may serve as a stepping stone that leads to work on television series or theatrical features. I point to actress Olivia Wilde (House, Tron: Legacy), whose work on The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Dark Necessities video a few years back served as a spring-board to directing bigger projects, such as the features Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling. Turn to page 14 for our "Making Music Videos" feature, and visit postmagazine.com to watch all of the videos. Austin Butler might be the busiest actor in Hollywood. You may remember our Elvis cov- erage back in 2022, and our feature on Masters of the Air earlier this year. Well, Butler is back again, this time in director Jeff Nichols' feature film The Bikeriders. Post contributor Iain Blair sits down with the director to discuss his work on the film, serves as an authentic look into a 1960s subculture — the motorcycle club. Turn to page 10 for our "Director's Chair" column. I had a chance to speak with actor Chris Pine about his first venture into directing for the indie film Poolman, which he co-wrote. Pine, who is known for playing Captain Kirk in the latest generation Star Trek films, among other roles, recounted the experience, which gave him a new appreciation for those who work below the line. You can read about it in our "Filmmaking" column on page 12. Beyond the print issue, Post has considerable online coverage as this year's Emmy Awards approach, including inside details from those working on How I Met Your Father, Only Murders in the Building, Shogun, The Crown, 3 Body Problem, Lessons in Chemistry and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
