4 S U M M E R 2 0 2 4 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y Welcome to the Summer issue of the CAS Quarterly! In this issue, you'll find stories and interviews with our Award winners, including our 10th Student Recognition Award recipient. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. We were very proud of this year's 60th Awards and our return to the Beverly Hilton for the first time since 1997, and we look forward to seeing you there for the 61st Awards on Feb. 22, 2025! You will also find a thoughtful article by former President Karol Urban CAS MPSE on a very timely topic, artificial intelligence (AI). This article reflects on the good and bad sides of the technology, especially as it applies to our work. The difficult line between AI's use as a tool and its potential to displace industry professionals is a main issue of contract negotiations this cycle, first with the Writers Guild and Directors Guild, but now the IATSE. Sound people are deeply involved in this as the Co-chairs of the AI Negotiating Subcommittee are Jillian Arnold, President of the West Coast Sound and Video Local, and myself. We've also been in touch with other international organizations struggling with the same concerns. By the time you read this, hopefully, great strides will have taken place, protecting those who are important to the industry while allowing them use of these helpful tools. Back to Student Recognition Award winners, I was very pleased to meet Danny Maurer at the recent New Mexico social gathering held by the CAS. He was our first student winner and is now an accomplished working sound professional. The gathering was a great opportunity for CAS members to meet with each other. Our Events Committee is working to put together more of these regional social events. We expect to see ones shortly in Atlanta, Vancouver, and other cities, along with the revival of the CAS Picnic in L.A. in June. Look for emails about these events, as well as screenings, panels, and more coming up shortly. Enjoy this issue of the Quarterly and I hope to see many of you at as many events as possible. Peter F.
