LABOR SCHOOL WHAT IS TITLE VII OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT ? As landmark legislation, the Civil Rights Act brought a legal end to the Supreme Court's 189 6 "separate but equal" ruling that allowed Jim Crow laws to exist. Outlawing segregation, the act prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Among its provisions is Title VII, which explicitly forbids this discrimination when applying for a job and in the workplace. Title VII also established the bipartisan U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce federals laws prohibiting employment discrimination. WHEN DID IT ORIGINATE? In 19 63 , as the country was rocked by violence against efforts at desegregation and the murder of activist Medgar Evers, President John F. Kennedy proposed comprehensive civil rights legislation. Following Kennedy's assassination, President Lyndon Johnson pushed this legislation forward, and the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress in July 19 64 . WHY DOES IT MAT TER TO YOU? Title VII prevents employers and labor unions from taking "adverse employment action" against employees for the characteristics protected by the Civil Rights Act. Such actions include, but aren't limited to, refusing to hire, firing, demoting, and refusing to promote. Title VII also forbids employers from retaliating against an employee for complaining about discrimination or filing a charge of discrimination against the employer. Over the years Title VII has expanded to protect additional characteristics including disability, age, pregnancy, genetic information, and gender identity.
