THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2024 • 35 SEASON 2 OF LOKI picks up where Season 1 drops off, no overlap or recap. This made the continuity a welcomed and wonderful challenge. We would start the season with Loki, our title character, carrying the appearance of three episodes' worth of fighting and battle damage from the back half of the first season. This would be made so much easier because I had created stencils to help recreate all those designs more quickly. Knowing that Tom Hiddleston (like most actors) wanted to spend more time in front of the camera than getting prepared for the day, I would employ both hands to cut the make-up time down dramatically. Being ambidextrous definitely has its advantages. Choosing an artistic team to replace my make-up team from Season 1 proved to be the greatest hurdle. Truth is, my team from season one was one of the best make-up crews that I have ever had the pleasure and honor to work with. Assembling an all-new crew to do characters that were established two years prior and on the other side of the world, seemed daunting but not overwhelming. It would all be accomplished with the promise of new characters and period looks to design and execute. Having to rely heavily on the trust of make-up artists in the UK who I had never met before worked out beautifully. I hired an artist named Jules Chapman to serve as the make-up supervisor, who in turn helped me find likeminded souls with the same artistic goals and ambitions as myself and those that I am accustomed to L-R: Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Owen Wilson as Mobius, Tom Hiddleston, Eugene Cordero as Casey, and Ke Huy Quan as OB PHOTOS BY GARETH GATRELL/MARVEL surrounding myself with. Egos were set aside in order to successfully emulate the looks from the first season. As I have done the Loki character with Tom for over a decade, the getting familiar part of the dance we as artists do with the actors was already set. Tom and I have a short form if you will, an unspoken language shared between us. I remember so vividly how this appeared to someone who knew little of the history Tom and I share. During Season 1 while Ned Neidhardt was making up Richard E. Grant as Classic Loki for episode four, Richard watched on incredulously as I moved and maneuvered Tom to do his make- up and body make-up all while never uttering a word. e whole time Richard and Tom carried on a conversation while I did my art, Tom subconsciously anticipating and reacting in kind. "You two worked together before?" Richard quipped. Tom and I sharing an unspoken trust and bond that transcends the need to discuss. Knowing and unquestioning each other is the greatest gi, and likely one of the many reasons I was traveling to the UK for the second season to continue the 'dance.' e new characters were Rafael Casal playing Brad Wolfe, Liz Carr playing Judge Gamble, Ke Huy Quan playing Ouroboros (OB), Kate Dickie playing General Dox, and Richard Dixon playing Robber Baron. All esteemed character actors with diverse talents. New cast in addition to all of the original cast that would be returning. When it comes to designing make-ups, I feel that it can
