"We believe that by generating demand for products made from recycled plastic, we can keep this valuable material from ending up in landfill, the oceans or incinerators. We demonstrate to companies that they can make beautiful and functional new goods from locally produced waste and make a visible commitment to the circular economy." Recycling centers process thousands of tons of plastic each month, however, uses for this recycled material remain limited. The Good Plastic Company's Polygood panels enable new applications for this valuable resource. On the other side, businesses all around the world are implementing circular economy business models, driven by regulation and market demand. This sustainability transformation is a substantial challenge but also represents an opportunity for all companies in the value chain. As The Good Plastic Company continues to develop and conduct feasibility inquiries, we feel fortunate that we as Art Directors and designers have a chance to ask questions and be a part of the development landscape with this particular company, as it could have a huge impact on the way we use surface plastics in the film industry. Right now, The Good Plastic Company has seven distributors across the globe. They have gone through certification processes (nontoxic VOC- free and fireproofing), obligatory lab tests, EPD (environmental product declaration certification), and are working on thicknesses, sheet-size determinations, and cost comparisons to standard sheet plastics. Their plan is to take back all cut-offs and unneeded material which can be shredded for re-use. They can do this seven to ten times before the material is compromised. Right now they are working to see how thin they can go—a ¼-inch thickness for example, would require an extrusion process instead of a pressurized process; and the opaque materials can go as thin as 1/8-inch, but not yet the clear sheets. We are continuing our dialogue with companies like this one, hoping that we can infuse our industry with useful and imaginative change to the sheet materials we use everyday, and encourage them to help us with our unique requirements by offering buy-back and take-back programs.
