Art Director George Knowles so that they would understand the function of each machine and which machines' special effects had tricked up to provide the relevant action for each scene. It was the cinematography of Jonathan Freeman, the costumes of Michael Wilkinson and the superb performances by the actors that gave the scenes the impact of that single decision that would echo down through the generations. The exterior of Red Coast Base was shot in western Spain, coincidentally not too far from where we had worked on Game of Thrones. On top of a mountain ridge, there exists a military facility where we were able to adapt the buildings so as to look like they belonged to the base in the 1960s and then were able to age them in a one-day turnaround so that the facility looked like it was abandoned by the time we came to film the modern-day scenes. The base of the big satellite dish was also built following many different iterations of its size. The image of the dish with the broken neck when Ye Wenjie comes to visit many years later is one that we modelled in cardboard first, together with many computer- aided versions. After battling with it for so long, I found it surprisingly moving to see it with its head bowed and broken. A C B D A. RED COAST BASE EXTERIOR. CONCEPT ART BY RYAN DE SILVA. B.
