They find themselves in the world of retro charm, with smoke effects and saturated stage lighting. For me, crafting this scene was an absolute delight. A journey back to my roots, to the days of working on music videos. I used classic techniques, theatrical flats hand-painted with whimsical cats, featuring mischievous backlit eyes. We elevated this set with a mix of different levels and risers, creating some dramatic yet low-tech layers. This scene was filmed in a gilded old vaudevillian theater on Staten Island. Assistant Art Director Brandon McNeel ran with this design and hit the high note. A good time was had by all, filming this segment. Next, we encounter a sequence that stands out as the height of fantasy for this film. It occurs toward the end, when some of the imaginary friends are freed from their confines, transforming the hallway of the retirement home around them. This pivotal scene is a spectacle of special and visual effects, featuring a dynamically shifting musical hallway set. What begins as a mundane corridor swiftly evolves into a breathtaking journey through various fantastical realms; a lush jungle, an enchanting castle, the vast expanse of outer space and even a whimsical pastry shop. Most of the effects were actually done on camera; pivoting walls and shooting stars, roots growing from jungle foliage. The sequence serves as the pinnacle of excitement and wonder in the film, offering a delightful departure from the somewhat ordinary retirement home set, as the imaginary friends experience freedom.
