directions for each town, which worked very well. We ended up taking over another airfield, Bovingdon in Hertfordshire, for these backlot sets, the POW camp sets and various other set pieces. The later scripts follow the captured airmen in the German prisoner-of-war camps. The airmen were held in terrible living conditions and subjected to severe weather for a year. The crew constructed a large prison block that served as the base for several other camps, including Stalag Luft III near Sagan and Stalag XIII-D in Nuremberg. We built the interiors with exteriors on location. This setup allowed the directors to move freely with the cameras, transitioning from exterior to interior to maintain the flow of the scenes. In the final episode, the Allied troops liberate the prison camp. Shooting this involved a real Merlin plane flying low over the sets and hundreds of actors and extras. Additionally, the episode incorporated tanks and other infantry vehicles, creating a major battle scene to depict the capture of the camp. Final Thoughts I feel incredibly honoured to have been part of what we hope will become a truly memorable production. It was one of the largest productions ever attempted in the UK, with an enormous crew. We had three huge backlots fifty miles apart, recreated bombed buildings in Central London, dressed multiple trains as prisoner boxcars, staged German domestic train bombings and used several great English countryside locations. There were four stages on a constant rotation, with two volume stages dedicated to plane work. Tackling the scale of the project wouldn't have been possible without my dedicated and committed team: As I always say: "I don't do this on my own, this is a team sport." ADG A. & B.
