FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS, YOU'VE ENTHRALLED US WITH FILMS THAT ENCOMPASS VIRTUALLY EVERY GENRE OF CINEMA, TAKING US ALONG ON ADVENTURES AROUND THE GLOBE TO THE LOCATION THAT BEST TELL YOUR STORY. WE'RE ALL ANXIOUS TO SEE WHERE YOU TAKE US NEXT!" " on the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. Spielberg splashed East and West Coast culture across screen with regionally grounded movies like E.T., which flawlessly captured suburban Southern California life in the early 1980s, and the gorgeous, vibrant NYC-based West Side Story 30 years later in 2009. Spielberg sounded his own creative depths by interacting with location choices on his more contemplative pieces: As the Oscar-winning director of Saving Private Ryan, considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made, he led his team in filming the logistically mammoth Omaha Beach scene under the gray skies of Curracloe Beach in Ireland. He worked with location and production teams in Shanghai to find areas of the city that matched the 1941 setting for Empire of the Sun, while sounding what would be perhaps his most somber chord by filming on location in Poland for his sere and indelible World War II masterpiece, Schindler's List. With his recent retrospective opus The Fabelmans, Spielberg plumbs displacement, family and identity in a moving love letter to his youth in Southern California, tasking location teams to recreate scenes in Malibu and Whittier to match his childhood memories as closely as possible. Supervising location manager Leann Emmert/LMGI can attest to the director's legendary creative energy that inspires excellence on set, as cast, crew and community embrace the artistic rigor that anchors his world-building magic. "The only thing that tops getting a call to work on a Steven Spielberg film, is getting a call to work on a film about Steven Spielberg, directed and co-written by Steven Spielberg," says Emmert. "The Fabelmans was like winning the location manager lottery! As we all well know, there are not that many people in this town who generate the kind of enthusiasm and warm reception that Spielberg does. The mere whisper of his name opens doors and hearts both on set and off." Former LMGI President and veteran location manager, Mike Fantasia (Munich, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal), shares his admiration for one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of all time. "Congratulations on receiving the prestigious Eva Monley Award, Steven! For more than 50 years, you've enthralled us with films that encompass virtually every genre of cinema, taking us along on adventures around the globe to the location that best tell your story. We're all anxious to see where you take us next!" From escapist adventures to profound dramas, war epics and creative touchstones, Steven Spielberg is a cultural cartographer whose body of work continues to chart vital human landscapes, one moving adventure at a time. For his historic contributions in elevating the craft of location management across genres, place and time, the LMGI is proud to present Steven Spielberg with the 2023 Eva Monley Award.
