She saw an opportunity to elevate the location profession and build negotiation leverage for better conditions and pay. The successful "In the Zone" show, juried by director Tony Scott and world-famous architectural photographer Julius Schulman, launched what would become the Location Managers Guild of America that same year. Beth spent the next decade building the membership, creating the Guild's website, and developing one of the production industry's first cellphone apps, a resource guide of location vendors. Her diverse production skills were put to use developing networks and supporting day-to-day operations. "Setting up logistics structures and systems that all come from being a production manager," she observes. Over the next years, Tate, Lori Balton and their colleagues organized workshops, exhibits and outreach events to boost the visibility of location management to the public, entertainment leaders, and the next generation of innovators. Now directing her artistry toward ceramics, where her work is featured at the prestigious Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Ojai, Tate reflects on two decades of work with the LMGI. "I'm very proud of the organization and what we've accomplished," she says. "Through the Guild, our department is finally getting the recognition it deserves." For her pioneering work in the inception, development, and continued support of the Location Managers Guild International as it celebrates its 20th anniversary, along with her remarkable artistic career, the LMGI is honored to confer the 2023 Trailblazer Award to Beth Tate.
