M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 7 Hello MPSE members around the world! Not to sound like a broken record, but I reiterate MPSE President Mark Lanza's words describing this year's MPSE Golden Reel Awards event, adding that the stars were definitely aligned in the heavens above the beautiful and historical Wilshire Ebell Theatre on February 26, 2023. It was so wonderful to see and chat with so many in person again, the energy at the 70th Annual MPSE Awards was off the charts! Congratulations to all the winners and every nominee! This was a fantastical tough year—the competition was incredibly close across the board. To find the full list of this year's winners and nominees, visit www.MPSE.org/ Current-Awards. I'd also like to take a moment to welcome our newest members from over the past year, including many new professional game audio and international members alike. This is a very exciting time for the MPSE in that we have been hard at work domestically and abroad in ongoing improvement of prestige and recognition of its members through education of both the entertainment community and general audience to the importance and the artistic merit of the contribution and expertise of sound editorial in all forms of media worldwide. MPSE Wavelength kicks off its summer quarterly, featuring this year's MPSE Career Achievement Award winner Gwendolyn Yates Whittle gracing our cover. Victoria Rose Sampson MPSE brings us a fabulous story of Gwen's amazing and adventurous journey, and what crazy, fun thing sent her down the road to discover her career. (Page 20) Solange S. Schwalbe MPSE shares her amazing interview with John Roesch MPSE for this edition of Wavelength. Anyone who knows John, knows he is a terrific storyteller, and he's shared some of his fascinating experiences from throughout his career with us. John recently announced his retirement as a Foley artist. It's also kind of serendipitous for myself, in that both John and Solange were my MPSE membership sponsors some years ago which I am ever so grateful for. I wish John all the best in his next chapter of new ventures. (Page 48) Charles Maynes MPSE collaborated with Dave Whitehead MPSE and Michelle Child to give us a glimpse into a few of this couple's experiences within their incredible careers. (Page 76) Jenny Ward MPSE returns with another fascinating interview with the one-and-only Richard King to share a glance into his extraordinary career with us. (Page 64) And to round out our amazing list of heavy hitters this quarter, Steve Lee brings us a very special interview, featuring the incredible Gary Rydstrom MPSE, or as Gary refers to himself as the "affordable Ben Burtt." (Page 36) Javier Quesada MPSE returns with his second in a five-part series of interesting articles breaking down the role of film sound. In our last quarterly, Javier wrote about "Sound and the Sensation of Film." In this edition, he writes about "Film Sound as Perceptual Access to the Diegesis," describing how the film soundtrack provides perceptual access to the film and the role of the sound designer as a perceptual enabler of the film who decides not only what is audible but how it sounds. (Page 72) Check out MPSE member Korey Pereira's review in Tech Corner on a time- saving ADR cueing program from the maker of EdiCue. (Page 14) You're going to love the new line of international swag MPSE just launched, so be sure to navigate your way to the Merch Store and grab some cool MPSE swag! MPSE.org/Merchandise. As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of Wavelength. We appreciate and thank our guests and contributors for taking the time out of their very busy schedules to share their incredible stories with us.
