M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 37 BY STEVE LEE, THSM FOUNDER Y STEVE LEE, THSM FOUNDER To paraphrase a few words for this introduction from my column in the Summer 2020 issue of Wavelength... There are a handful of names one could argue are "rock stars" in our field … and Gary Rydstrom would be one of them. The man rose the ranks in just a few years at Skywalker Sound to be nominated twice–in both sound categories–for Oscars in 1992, winning both for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Then he won again for Jurassic Park just a couple years later. He has won seven Academy Awards so far. Gary has also won nine MPSE Golden Reel Awards in Best Sound Editing to date, and was also the 2005 MPSE Career Achievement Award recipient. His insanely impressive resume also includes Toy Story, Mission: Impossible, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, X-Men, Minority Report, Ready Player One, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and many other iconic titles. Gary is one of the kindest, most generous, and extremely modest people you could know. He has become a fierce supporter of The Hollywood Sound Museum—he was one of the first guests on our podcast. We first met in 1995 (chronicled in the aforementioned column). The following interview is from one of our Hollywood Sound Museum webinars, which took place in October 2020. A slightly longer version of this edited conversation will be appearing in Volume 1 of a series of books titled The Hollywood Sound Museum Conversations, coming very soon. ➺
