The Verna Fields Student Award was presented by EIPMA President and past MPSE Vice President Bernard Weiser. Bernard has a genuine passion for supporting the next generation of filmmakers, so he was the perfect choice for this category. Our student winner not only walked away with a trophy, but also the Ethel Crutcher Scholarship, worth $5,000 to help him in his studies. Our Non-Theatrical Feature and Foreign Feature category winners were announced by the MPSE's own Midge Costin. Midge is a living legend in the sound community and had a special connection with our Filmmaker Award recipient, having worked on many of his biggest films. It was an extra special night for Midge as she also got to present an award to two of her former students. They learned from the best! For the final three categories of the evening, we were beyond thrilled to surprise the audience with Hollywood legend Ed Harris. Ed was an absolute delight and was very proud to be part of the evening celebrating Jerry Bruckheimer. The cherry on Ed's presenting sundae was announcing Top Gun: Maverick as the winner of our Feature Effects/ Foley category. For the first time ever, we got a picture of the winning sound team with the film's director, producer, and one of the stars. Epic! After the show was finished, it was time to party! We had an incredible array of delectable dinner options, from sliders to tacos to flatbreads, followed by a mouth-watering collection of scrumptious desserts. An open bar, a rocking live seven-piece band, and a full dance floor were the perfect way to end an incredible evening. We made some big changes to the Golden Reel Awards this year, from the format to the venue to the after party. We were overwhelmed by the response from our attendees. The comment we heard more than any other was, "This was the best Golden Reel Awards ever!" Membership A hearty thank you to all our members who have encouraged colleagues to join the MPSE. Our membership has been steadily growing, and that is one of the reasons we have been able to host more opportunities for our members to get together outside of work obligations and just enjoy each other's company. MPSE Fall Family Picnic Plans are already underway for this year's MPSE Fall Family Picnic, which will be held on Saturday, October 7, from noon to 4 p.m. Last year's event was such a success that we have chosen to return to the beautiful, sprawling 26- acre Vasa Park in Agoura Hills. We just couldn't pass up that wicked 200-foot tube slide! This year promises to be even better, with more games and attractions to accompany the fresh and delicious buffet feast. All picnic donations benefit the Ethel Crutcher Scholarship Fund.
