4 2 P E R S P E C T I V E | M AY / J U N E 2 0 2 3 This one scene shown above, early in episode one of the third season of The Mandalorian, combines many of the elements I love about this streaming series which our team has been working on for the last four years. The Story - The scene shows a tender moment in the growing relationship between the Mandalorian and his infant charge set against the vastness of space. Through the preceding seasons, viewers have watched as the ruthless bounty hunter's life is turned upside down following his adopting the force-wielding youngster. Now they are starting to see their relationship gel into something between father-son and master-apprentice. The Process - This scene is achieved using a mixture of virtuoso old-school animatronic artistry and bleeding-edge virtual production techniques, which our visionary show runner Jon Favreau has fostered. The child in this scene is played by a live-action animatronic puppet created by Legacy Effects. The majority of shots of the child use physical puppetry, and the shots that rely on a CG character take their look and motion cues from the physical performance.
