This parameter (default set to one second) is located at the bottom of the window. Mendez said, "Typically, you don't want the transition to happen over a long period of time because the longer the morph, the more you notice it. We usually start at four frames and then adjust it as needed. You can also change where the transition is happening. Is it happening exactly on the cut? More to the A side? More to the B side? Playing around with where it happens can help smooth it out." When applying FluidMorph to more complicated scenes — for example, if the actor on screen is in a car with a moving background, or the actor is moving around on-screen — Good and Mendez consulted " Th e L a s t o f Us" v i s u a l e f fe c ts e d i to r Luke Botteron, who was a vendor visual effects editor on "Captain Marvel," "Free Guy," and "Deadpool." Botteron helped them spot issues that the visual effects team would need to address. "I would look at the FluidMorphs in the Avid and make sure they seemed re- alistic. If the actor's head is moving around during the morph effect, there may be some blending or stretching that's creating a noticeable morph effect. That's not what we want. We're trying to get an invisible visual effect that looks realistic," he said. Botteron also considers how the effect will look in 4K, because the higher resolu- tion will reveal more details in the picture, making any odd results of the morph effect even more noticeable. "In the Avid, we're not actually looking at it in 4K, so I'm thinking about what prob- lems might arise, like has the camera moved a bit during the morph effect and is that going to give it a weird parallax effect? Or, if it's a driving scene, the background is going to be different. When you use FluidMorph, it's going to react to the background, too. That would require extra visual effects and would be more difficult for the visual effects vendor.
