O'NEIL, a union leader and actor with a decades-long career that began in the 1960s, passed away Aug. 5, 2022, at 91. A fierce advocate for performers, O'Neil served more than 25 years on the Screen Actors Guild Board, including eight years as treasurer and on numerous committees. In addition, O'Neil served as treasurer for the AFTRA-SAG Credit Union and was a Board member of the SAG-AFTRA Credit Union. O'Neil began his union board service in 1976, and he would go on to receive the Ralph Morgan Award, named for SAG's first president. It has been given periodically since 1981 for distinguished service to the union's Los Angeles membership. Throughout his career, the Hartford, Connecticut, native made appearances in numerous films and television shows, including The Hunt for Red October, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Greatest American Hero and Moonlighting, in addition to stage productions.
