For Members O n the eve of the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on April 28, leaders from SAG-AFTRA, the entertainment industry, Congress, the Biden administration and media joined with Hollywood talent in Washington, D.C., to formally launch Green Council. Founded by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, Green Council is a collaborative effort to advance eco-responsible entertainment and to inspire audiences to do the same. Drescher recognized that by bringing together the individual sustainability programs in the entertainment space, the industry could realize an impact larger than the sum of its parts. Accordingly, Green Council is designed to underscore the independent efforts of each entity in addition to Green Council's collaborative missions. Together, the members of Green Council identified the reduction of single-use plastic on set, on screen and in audience homes, while normalizing reusables as its first mission. The criteria for determining that mission was that it had to be demonstrative on screen, practiced on set and a doable challenge for at-home audiences. "Tonight the entertainment industry takes the hero's journey together on behalf of the greater good in solidarity," said Drescher. "We appreciate that our industry is unlike most others, because we have the capability of shaping a culture, shifting a paradigm, influencing audiences around the world, and to that end, tonight we launch Green Council." Green Council's founding members include Drescher, Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Billy Porter, Salma Hayek, Gloria Estefan, Jeff Bridges, Peter Sarsgaard, Rosario Dawson, Kyra Sedgwick, Diane Keaton, Kevin Bacon, Aida Rodriguez, Jason Momoa, Rachel Bloom, Chris Colfer, David Dastmalchian and Ellen Crawford. In addition to SAG-AFTRA, Green Council partners include the Motion Picture Association, Writers Guild of America West, Directors Guild of America, Recording Industry Association of America, the International Association of Theatrical and Stage Employees and the Teamsters. NGO advisors include Cancer Schmancer Movement, Environmental Media Association, Plastic Pollution Coalition, Habits of Waste, Environment and Human Health Inc., Green the Bid, Environmental Working Group and Plastic Oceans.
