PUBISHERS' MESSAGE Farewell NEW GREEN BOOK for Travel project ….. A s many of you long-time BM&T readers know, Black Meetings & Tourism designed the NEW GREEN BOOK (NGB) For TRAVEL Directory project with the intent to create a digital concept based on the historic Green Book, showcasing the Black travel experience and African American travel related business- es, organizations and companies. However, as it became clear that the business partners we brought in to provide the underwriting for the NGB were not in alignment with our vision and/or values, BM&T opted to withdraw our participation from this project and essentially halt its development. In keeping with our commitment to provide the best media support possible for the market that we serve, this year BM&T will launch BLACK AMERICA 250, a multiyear national media and marketing initia- tive (commemorating the U.S.A's 250th anniversary) which will provide opportunities for us to work more closely with our constituents in the Travel Industry and help generate economic empowerment in the greater African American community. While some in high places are attempting to alter, comprise and/or eliminate our history and its signifi- cance in the making of America, BA 250 – OUR Semiquincentennial will allow us to "light a candle, rather than curse the darkness." This national initiative parallels the mission of the non-partisan U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, created by Congress, (P.L. 114-196) to design and implement "initiatives and programs that honor our first 250 years and inspire Americans to imagine our next 250." The interactive website www.theblackamerica250.com, serves as an accessible tool for travelers to learn the stories of perseverance and triumph of African Americans in this country, as they visit destinations across the U.S. See the BA 250 – OUR Semiquincentennial feature article in this issue of BM&T magazine to further learn about the rationale and components of this initiative.
