MAKE-UP ARTISTS & HAIR STYLISTS GUILD AWARDS | 17 V A N G U A R D A W A R D H A I R S T Y L I N G JUDY CROWN For more than 40 years, Judy Crown has forged an outstanding career in the film and television industry as a hair stylist with a passion for elevating the working conditions and wage equity for her sisters and brothers. A seven-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee, Judy was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Hair Styling for a Series for Designing Women. She won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Hair Styling for a Mini-Series, Movie, or Special for her work on the movie for television, Houdini. She has also been nominated for her work on e Day Aer, Moonlighting, Murphy Brown, Bye Bye Birdie, and Geppetto. As a personal hair stylist to the stars, Judy has worked with Lauren Bacall, Candice Bergen, Jason Alexander, and Angela Lansbury. She had a long stint as hair stylist for Seinfeld. Judy received her basic hair styling education in her hometown of Washington, D.C. She was one of a handful of Americans to be accepted for advanced training at Vidal Sassoon's Salon in London. Aer returning to the United States, she worked in the best salons in Washington, D.C., including Elizabeth Arden, and aer moving to Southern California, worked at Elizabeth Arden in Beverly Hills until she entered the television and film industry in 1978. Judy has been a member of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild since 1978. Always a fierce advocate for her sisters and brothers, Judy led the way in the 1990s in contract negotiations with the AMPTP. Her goal was to achieve equity in wages for both hair stylists and make-up artists. e groundbreaking research and courageous proposals to the producers have been the basis for the pursuit of equality ever since. Part of her dream was realized in our 2021 IATSE contract when the low-budget make-up and hair wages were successfully equalized. Since retiring in 2007, Judy remains active teaching journeyman classes for MPIPHP Contract Services. She also teaches specialty skills to newer hair stylists for Local 706. She is a member of the TV Academy and has served several terms as Governor for the Hairstyling Branch. As Local 706 Secretary-Treasurer in the early 2000s, Judy was instrumental in reorganizing the antiquated financial structure. A passionate animal rights activist, Judy has for decades rescued every kind of animal, including horses, dogs, cats, and everything in-between. Passionate, tough as nails but with a heart of gold and truly gied at her cra, Judy Crown is the person you always want to stand with you in the fight.
