M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 35 dad what I do! We sat at my workstation and I showed him my session. The tracks rolled by on my monitor in front of us in lockstep with picture. Waveforms growing and shrinking made it immediately obvious what was going on. In the time before, when we cut without waveforms displayed explaining this would have been harder to do, "OK dad, this is a Moviola. I know, it's painted a weird WPA surplus green, it looks like some kind of early Industrial Revolution drill press, it is kind of dangerous and is really noisy, watch out! Those are razor blades!" On my monitor, I showed him how we move sound around in relation to picture, how to plow through that massive sound library hunting for new sounds and bring them in, how we cut parts out, how to stretch and squish stuff, how to layer, combine and crossfade sounds and send them to Brad. I looked at him, I could see the wheels turning, I could see the light bulb over his head switch on. This whole thing was making sense to him! Seeing the sounds and hearing the sounds playing with picture was logical, footage and timecode making it mathematical. It was all becoming clear. We flew those sweeteners in, thumbs up from Brad and thankfully they worked. He now understood what I did and he was impressed. This father of mine who I had let down during my adolescence more times than Bart had disappointed Homer was actually impressed. Now if I could just do the same with my wife and those damn kids of mine (adjusts imaginary tie while muttering, "No respect..."). We were done with the reel. Let's wrap this up and get dad and Maria the hell out of Dodge before things go sideways and I'm revealed for the fraud that I am. The old Impostor Syndrome I was never able to completely tame rearing it's ugly head once again. Then from director Steve, "Would your dad and sister like to stay for "We sat at my workstation and I showed him my session. L-R: Maria, James, and Chris Assells, WB late 2013.
