40 SAG-AFTRA | Fall/Winter 2022 | sagaftra.org Broadcast News Shop Steward Training Focuses on Onboarding New Members O n Sept. 22, SAG-AFTRA Broadcast staff and stewards convened the third virtual quarterly shop steward training of 2022, which was open to all shop stewards, and more than 50 attended. Staff opened the discussion by diving into best onboarding practices, including the importance of contacting new hires early to welcome them to the unit, providing a hard copy of the union contract and educating new members on station culture. Additionally, the training covered how to best answer common new member questions, such as membership requirements, how to handle personal service contracts, and the benefits of being in the union. Experienced stewards in shops across the country also had an opportunity to share their protocols and strategies for onboarding new members. Staff members shared their role in the onboarding process, focusing on the components of the welcome email sent to new members with union information, and the role of membership officers, who are responsible for dues, membership applications, notices and more. The training wrapped up with a discussion on the efficacy of virtual onboarding, what resources stewards think would be helpful in the future and an open Q&A for stewards and staff. The next shop steward training was scheduled for Dec. 1, with the discussion to focus on running effective labor-management meetings.
