THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 • 67 The Talokanil It was fulfilling to create the Talokanil characters—we were deeply inspired by Mesoamerican culture and tradition—especially Yucatan and Mayan post-classic period. I researched to develop looks that would be culturally appropriate and stylish. We used hairpieces and wigs to create the eyes. We used hair color to color all of the wigs to an off-black color. We made our hair accessories with jeweled stones and gold pieces. The challenge was that the Talokanil was an underwater society. And that meant the actors were underwater for 8 to 12 hours a day. We did compensate by using different types and strengths of silicone glues. The glue was applied to the base of each wig and hairpiece.
