60 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 to create an ombre look; I first bleached the locs and then added Goldwell color in 8KG. Then the locs were attached to the wig. M'Baku (Winston Duke) Winston gave me inspiration in designing the look of the Jabari tribe by showing me photos of Senegalese warrior looks. In Wakanda Forever, M'Baku's looks have matured. We have added hand-tied wefts with three shades of gray. In addition, we also colored his hair with a high lift color only on his ends for contrast. To evolve his look from the Mohawk hair style from the first movie, we used a 1980s shag to give him a more creative look. The style is created with a custom lace hairpiece. It is applied with silicone glues in the center, and we used spirit gum glue on the outer edges. I can remember working in the salon in the 1980s and cutting guys' hair into this shag look; everything comes back around. Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) Ryan Coogler's original idea for Ramonda and Shuri was that they would cut off their hair in mourning of T'Challa's death. That would make her hair much shorter; I created a short white and gray wig. Her hair was curled with 1/8 size curling iron. Natascha Ladek made Ramonda's wigs. Shuri (Letitia Wright) Shuri's hair style is created with a hairpiece; the style is set with two strands flat twist on the sides and an individual two-strand twist on the top. Her hair on the sides and back was clipper-cut to keep it short and close. Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) We created a braided back of six cornrows. We added Rasta Free braiding hair into each braid, and the braids were put into two buns in the back. The braids were created for her character, who is a college student. Also, the (L-R): Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright as Shuri
