THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 • 55 going against the grain. For all looks after this, I went three shades lighter with her skin tone. In Amsterdam, she lives a very bohemian lifestyle, reflecting this with a montage of avant-garde looks: black smudges with a smoky, shiny eye shadow created with oils and grease, and pink reddish lips. Art deco-influenced nails, with the famous half moon painted around the cuticle, and French tips with a dot in the middle, our signature look for Valerie as an artist. Her final look at the gala is the most vintage and glamorous. The brows lightly started from the nose and created a thin half moon elongated to 45 degrees from the nose line. I tapped cheek rouge almost directly under her eyes to make them more large and luminous. On the lips I used two different colors, achieving full lips with two long mounds that flare out at the corners. We used a thin make-up brush to add two dots from the red of the rouge cheek on the inner corner of each eye for a unique look using a MAC lipstick. Art deco half moon nails in a rouge purple noir color with a black dot. All of this would never happen without a village of talented make-up artists. At the height of COVID, I lost key crew for the first three weeks of the production. Jason Collins, my dear friend, stepped in immediately. My assistant Dept. Head Miho Suzuki for all her organization and talent, make-up artist Kenny Myers, Chris Gallaher-Christian's personal, personals Carla White, Lisa Deveaux, and Vera I. Steimberg, Joel Harlow and Richard Alonzo for the amazing work on our autopsy, Louie Zakarian for the initial design for Mike Myers, and Sweet P Vaughn, Jennifer A. Aspinall and Akiko Matsumoto for the background work. •
