48 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 AMSTERDAM RECREATES PERIOD GLAMOUR It was early January 2020 and I was knee-deep on a film in Toronto, Nightmare Alley, when I got a call from David O. Russell. He was enthusiastic and full of ideas to share. This was nothing new to me since I've had the honor of collaborating with him on three previous films: Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. Our initial conversation lasted into the wee hours of the morning. We bounced ideas back-and-forth and he really felt we had a strong idea of the way to head for our top three characters. The only thing that stood in our way is that I would not be available to do this film with him due to overlapping projects. ADRUITHA LEE I got a call from Lori asking if I'd be interested in doing an upcoming David O. Russell feature, now entitled Amsterdam. She wanted to make sure he was in good hands due to their collaborative relationship, and I was delighted. One of my favorite parts of the creative process comes from the early creative planning phases of a feature and the research that it involves. We approached this camera test in a pre-COVID world, before the deep dive into health screenings, masks, goggles, nose swabbing and everything else that came with it-it sounds like a foreign world as I think back on it now. The film spanned from 1918 to 1933, and the 15-year span covers some beautiful, nuanced hair styling eras that are incredibly gratifying to bring to life. David and I went back-and-forth with his vision for the looks, and some of his favorite images we referenced included Katharine Hepburn, in addition to many varying looks from the silent movie period into the 1930s.
