"That's me winning an Emmy right there [for 'John Adams']." Warner Bros. and Universal, Artistry in Sound is the only African-American-owned audio post facility, according to Johnson. Since hanging out his shingle, he won another Primetime Emmy — for the minise- ries "John Adams" (2008) — and continues to work on numerous high-profile projects. "I know that it's very difficult for un- derrepresented people to sometimes get opportunities in this business, because this business is full of nepotism, it's full of favoritism," he said. "In my company, I w a n te d to m a k e s u re t h a t I a l l o w e d people from underprivileged, economically deprived neighborhoods the opportunity to learn about [post-production sound]. I have several young African-American assistants at the moment, people that I'm sort of mentoring." Gazing at his poster-lined hall, John- son says, "When I walk through it, it just reminds me of how far I've come and some of my accomplishments. It gives me a sense of pride every time I walk through,and reminds me what I really do this for is to be good at my craft." ■ ABOVE: "I have a lot of posters around.
