ties in beautifully with the branding of the show, and brings a meta-theatricality to the conclusion of this portion of Mabel's character arc. Scenery Isn't Funny. Comedians are Funny. Only Murders in the Building is a comedy, but I am ever mindful that scenery should not be funny. When a designer goes into that place, no good can come of it. There can be gags, of course, but in order for comedy to happen, there must be truth. Visually, the Art Department did our best to create story and truth as a platform for something funny to happen. This incredible team made these apartments the central nervous system of the show—places of respite, playfulness, sophistication, drama and mystery. The day Oliver's apartment was opened, Martin Short walked onto the set, and swore that he had been in his apartment before. This was when I knew we had nailed it. The actor was comfortable in his space—right up until the moment Steve Martin said it was nicer than his place, and he wanted to switch. I grabbed Rich and Jordan and we slowly backed out through the door we came in. ADG A. MABEL'S APARTMENT LIVING ROOM. ILLUSTRATION BY ALI KASHFI. B. & C. MABEL'S APARTMENT.
