foray into using VR in the design process. With the headset on, I understood immediately what changes needed to be made. Walking through the spaces showed where ceilings needed to be raised and dropped, and how the size of the spaces could be massaged to make it easier for the camera to move through them. The most valuable part of this process was watching what happened when series EP/director Jamie Babbitt and cinematographer Chris Teague put the headset on. As we watched on the monitor, they immediately understood how the sets worked, and started finding the sweet spots in the sets within seconds. Based on this initial walkthrough, Chris and I started opening the sets up more and more to maximize the depth and views from room to room. While operating the VR takes a couple minutes to get comfortable with, it is definitely going to become an integral stop along my workflow path. t this early stage in the process, I still strongly believe that the models should be white, and the furniture and details as nondescript as possible. Indicating where light sources might be is useful to the cinematographer, and the sizes of the key pieces of decor (sofas, chairs, desks) is helpful as well, but I am wary of distracting collaborators with specific colors or textures. There is plenty of time for that, and illustrations and boards are still the best place for those choices, which will invariably change as the looks evolve.
