This room was to be the fruit of Peter's imagination—a present to Catherine and their unborn baby. bove the fireplace hung a portrait of the couple holding their baby—at first it has an unfinished face, which gets painted in' once the baby is born. Someone once asked me if the design of the show somehow reflected the comedy of the writing and it caught me unprepared. I knew I hadn't been consciously looking for comedic tones through design. owever, looking back, I believe there is a strong element of playfulness in my approach to design—the result of the freedom I have to interpret the material and to find inspiration anywhere. The scripts for each episode of the show are a neverending opportunity to create fun sets and props. ltimately, I believe, all the artists on the show are creatively liberated by the humorous approach to historical drama.
