2 0 P E R S P E C T I V E | J U L Y / A U G U S T 2 0 2 2 Dan Caplan For over 25 years, Dan Caplan has worked primarily as a storyboard artist for commercials, television series and feature films. As an illustration/fine art major at CSUN, an exhibit of Star Wars and Apocalypse Now storyboards in the university art gallery inspired him to head into production, a natural path having grown up with an editor father who worked on well known TV shows like Gunsmoke and The Streets of San Francisco. Dan's long working relationship with HBO has led to work on many of its popular shows The Reckoning is a long- term personal project, intended for the pages of a graphic novel, and perhaps for the motion picture screen as well. The story opens with the mysterious Griffin Greyhawk making his way into an enemy's lair, his vengeful motivation soon to be revealed. It is a tale of swords and sorcery, sacrifice and salvation, with an eye on the fallout of unintended consequences. Inspired by stories and imagery from the world of fantasy books and illustration, it also draws from cinematic genres, and Dan's many years of experience with visual storytelling. such as Westworld, Game of Thrones, Watchmen, True Blood, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Six Feet Under. Other TV work includes Star Trek: Picard and Homeland. Feature work includes such titles as Reminiscence, Salt and I Love You Man. Dan periodically exhibits his personal work, which ranges from expressive figure studies to contemplative paintings. He recently self- published a collection of life drawings entitled Figuratively Speaking Volume 1, and is working on an original graphic novel.
