Summer 2022
L E T T E R
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
DEAR MEMBERS,
I have been thinking lately about the power
of the ballot box. There is a responsibility that
comes with voting—and also of being elected.
My thanks to those who re-elected me to
the LMGI Board for another term and to the
Board for entrusting me with the leadership
role for another year. It's a responsibility I do
not take lightly. I was raised by two humble
blue-collar immigrant parents who instilled
in me the value of service. It is a privilege to
serve on both my union's Board in Toronto and here with you as LMGI President.
I'm proud to work with our newly elected Board; we are fortunate to have such
dedicated members who volunteer their time and energy making the LMGI
run. I cannot ask for a better group to help shape and guide our future. I want
to personally thank departing Board members Jen Farris and JJ Levine for their
service and their friendship as I navigated my fi rst year as president. A hearty
welcome to new Board members David McKinney and Lisa Scope. Lisa is our
fi rst Board member based in Australia, further expanding our influence as an
international organization.
In June, we presented you, the membership, with a broad slate of nominees for
our 9th Annual Awards. You voted for the fi nalists, and the vote for the winners
is happening now. As newly minted members of the Television Academy, we
recently voted to select this year's Emmy nominees. With membership comes
responsibility—and as I fi lled out the Emmy ballot, it occurred to me that the Guild
had prepared me to make choices that were well-informed.
Many shows that our awards committee has presented for us to consider were
also on the Emmy ballot. Our Zoom panels, newsletters, website, and
Compass
articles have exposed us to the best of what we and our colleagues help to create.
We continually educate ourselves about the work that's on the screen—and that
now gives us the power to influence the outcome of the voting.
What started as a dream to elevate our craft in the eyes of our industry by a group
of colleagues sitting around a kitchen table in Los Angeles has evolved into an
international Guild now on the cusp of our 20th anniversary in 2023.
The stature we have since attained was brought home to me as the Guild's
representative at the recent Cannes Film Festival—an event I was thrilled and
honored to have been invited to attend! The goodwill and trust we have built over
the years with our network of fi lm commissioners and partners from all over the
world is proof that our eff orts are appreciated. They look to us for Fam Tour and
educational opportunities and it was great to connect again with many of them
and plan for future events.
