THE NORTHMAN
A 10th-century epic Viking saga of revenge for the brutal
murder of a father at the hands of an uncle is set across three
countries, all of which historically had a huge Viking presence.
North Ireland doubles for the north of Scotland, Ukraine
and Iceland, emulating the differences in topography and
terrain and remaining true to each actual place. The dramatic
landscape encapsulates the drama that unfolds and provides
the scope and scale of the bloody action that embraces
the mysticism of Old Norse legends and makes no effort to
distinguish between fantasy and reality. Footage filmed in
Iceland provides the magnificent expanse of the glaciers.
THE POWER OF THE DOG
In 1920s Montana, two brothers run a large cattle ranch
and share a room in their big house, looming large in the
open landscape. Family dysfunction intensifies when one of
them takes a wife. As the intense drama unravels, the harsh
environment sets the mood for the story that was filmed in
New Zealand. The interior and exterior of the ranch was found
on a property near Hawkdun Range, in Central Otago. With
a view of the captivating rocky hill range, the property was a
perfect fit for the film. The hay making campsite, a swimming
hole, and the town of Herndon help express the scale of the
ranch and create individual emotional environments suitable
for intimate and brutal moments to unfold.
