48 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2022 the very start, I had a very good production team luckily, and all the rest of the team was wonderful." Lathrop says Liston was integral to making it all come together. "The logistics of doing a show this big are immense, and for nobody more immense than Naomi and her location team, and they were simply amazing. I could always lean on Naomi to ask her logistics, and honestly, we wouldn't have been able to do any of this without her." "Naomi was the perfect location manager for this movie," agrees Boyd. "She's not afraid to go to locations that no one had ever filmed before, because they were too hard to access. She was able to meet this creative vision that the director wanted and find these beautiful, fantastic locations but then she made them work logistically." Thanks in part to Liston's work, The Northman became one of the first major films to shoot during the pandemic—and despite the brutal production conditions, it's widely considered to be the most accurate Viking film ever made. Tasked with finding and managing a slate of grueling locations to meet an exacting creative goal—in wretched weather during a global pandemic—she responded by slipping on her galoshes and wading into the fray. Liston herself is modest about literally moving the earth to create a film that broke creative ground on so many levels. "It was great fun, and it looked incredible! It was a fantastic opportunity—and they don't come along that often." Liston's latest project as supervising location manager showcases a sunny, colorful Northern Ireland in the upcoming film reboot of the popular RPG franchise, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, starring Regé-Jean Page, Chris Pine and Michelle THE NORTHMAN LOCATION DEPARTMENT: Naomi Liston/LMGI - SLM Gordon Wycherley - LM Damian McDonald - ALM Kieran Burns - ALM John Vaughan - ALM Shona McGuigan - Location Coordinator Paul Burns - Location Assistant Michael Moore - Location Assistant Louise Kealey - Location Assistant Gavin Kelly - Unit Manager: Floor Thor Kjartansson - SLM: Iceland Unit The Northman. Liston embraced the brighter medieval landscapes of the fantasy epic, grounding its high-flying story in Northern Ireland's historic beauty. "It was so nice to go onto something like Dungeons & Dragons, which is all happy, all pretty, everything's got to be flowery, so you'll see Northern Ireland in a really lovely light." Watch for breathtaking castles, beaches and technicolor- green estates, including Carrickfergus Castle and the hidden coastal village of Galboly. Written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the movie also features scenes in Iceland and at England's Alnwick Castle, aka Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is out March 3, 2023.
