14 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2022 AND THE NOMINEES ARE… The 2022 LMGI Awards Committee gleefully jumped into the LMGI Awards process—researching, viewing and evaluating more than 250 projects submitted for consideration for an LMGI Award in the categories of Feature Film, Television Series, Commercials and Film Commission. This year, the Guild decided to return to the award's original two-stage voting process—a broader slate of projects in each category was presented to membership for the fi rst round of voting to determine the fi ve or six fi nalists. This allowed us to share more worthy contenders for you to consider and required less excruciating curating on our part. This year, all these artistically compelling projects were aff ected by the pandemic in some way. We salute your ingenuity and resilience to adjust to COVID protocols and keep moving forward. The nominees represent the extraordinary range and skill of their location professionals and hail from all parts of the globe with varying budgets and visions—from small indies to studio tentpoles, from pointed comedy to heartbreaking drama—in every imaginable genre. Dystopian future worlds, meta/alternate universes, time-shifting mind benders, period costume drama, big family drama, social injustice stories, spy thrillers and true crime sagas are once again popular themes this year. We are awed by your work—whether your submission was selected as a semifi nalist or not—we know what it takes to do your jobs. Our criteria to hold locations as integral to the action, motivation and tone of the storytelling is specifi c, and does not diminish the quality of your eff orts. Please continue to submit your projects regardless of what you think is being looked for. The committee members watch it all! We have an insatiable curiosity to know where projects are being fi lmed and debated endlessly on how the locations mesh with the story. The fi lm commission nominees salute the tireless devotion of fi lm commission staff to help solve production challenges. They open the doors that make our sometimes over-the-top requests to access incredible locations or impact a city's normal activity possible! We encourage you to explore the amazing work you have voted to move forward as fi nal nominees. In another round of voting, you will determine the winners, who will be announced on August 27 at a gala event in Los Angeles—and in person! Please think about volunteering on a 2023 awards committee. It's a great opportunity to view great projects, e-meet inspirational location professionals from around the world and promote the creative contribution we make to our industry. Please join us in celebrating the "Class of 2022." Atlanta ATLANTA Season 3 Surreal, hilarious and often disturbing, Atlanta Season 3 stays home and travels abroad to tell stories that delve deep into issues of racial identity. Whether in Amsterdam, Paris, London or Atlanta—each locale reflects deeply embedded cultural attitudes that continue to permeate the present, confounding the characters and challenging our assumptions in the most original, understated and thoughtful way. OUTSTANDING LOCATIONS IN A CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES Better Call Saul BETTER CALL SAUL Season 6 The perfectly framed evocative locations found in Albuquerque and on Pueblo land in New Mexico tell the backstory of attorney Jimmy McGill as he transforms into Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad. The desolate and dramatically beautiful desert plays for Mexico. In the haciendas and elaborate hideouts of the drug cartels, in the boardrooms, federal courtrooms and prisons of the legal system, and in the small eateries and bleak shopping malls where people do business—shady plans are hatched and brutal schemes unravel.
