y s a o rasorao ... a s rs yo o r yo ro ara r In woring with Emmy Rossum to unloc the loo o ngelyne, the early preproduction ey art schedule orced us into the deep end rom the beginning. I had to start by creat ing all the printed loos to use throughout the show high school photos, 0s head shots, early band posters, yers, tshirts, and o course, all the iconic 0s and 0s billboards. We replicated and custombuilt the costumes down to abricating ewelry and shoes. Doing so gave me a crashcourse in the visual language o ngelyne, which I expanded upon as I designed the series. srs ors as. o s ory o arar rrs os What I love about ngelyne is it may present as a biography, but its actually a subective meditation on hyperselactualiation. That was a dream or me not ust to recreate eras rom the 50s to present day, but to do so in a shiting visual dialogue with how our shows version o ngelyne needs to eel and appear in each o those eras, the interplay o memory and myth. Thanully, there is a linear visual as wellhow ngelynes im age evolves, how her body changes, her fi t changes, how the styles evolve, the colors become more extreme, we can visually trac it, and it emotionally connects. yo a soo o s arr a o o yo a a ra rso The layers o ngelynes artifi ce are the per ect vehicle or truth. Emmy was the most earless collaborator in that regard. We uicly bonded in how we both respected that under the u y pin sparles and the stiletto mules was a deeply complicat ed human being, and we wored together to dis cover imperect elements to visually express those tells o her unguarded humanity. Those rayed edges on the polished image reed both o us to be as bold and extreme with the loos as they really were, because we were always careul to locate the human moments o truth. a ao yor s ross or s so as My driving uestion or the whole series was, What does ngelyne see when she sees her sel I started by woring bacwards, not only ocusing on the visuals that we now to be ngelyne, but to create the memory ban o images that made her eel glamorous, pin, and magical.
