The Discovery crew feel. e opportunity came up for him to record his music at Air Studios with a live orchestra and even though he was scoring to animatics at that time, we wanted to try and make it work. And he did. I was very lucky to be part of a very encouraging and supportive team who trusted me even when I struggled but that only made the experience so much sweeter because the film couldn't be what it is with- out everybody's efforts. WAVELENGTH: What was it like to hear when you found out you had won the Verna Fields Student Award for Build Me Up at the MPSE 69th Annual Golden Reel Awards? GW: I was stunned. I actually heard the news from my friends who were watching it. Due to the time difference in the UK where I'm based and having to work the next day, I had missed the live stream, thinking that I wasn't likely to win it. My friends were calling to tell me and at that moment it was just a blank before all the emotions came crashing down on me. I couldn't believe I managed to pull it off. It was overwhelming and I was so grateful and honoured to have my work heard and acknowledged by these sound profession- als. WAVELENGTH: What are your hopes and dreams for the future? GW: Currently, I am freelancing from the UK where I am based. I would like to become a sound designer not restricted by geographical constraints but free to collab- orate and work on projects from home too. I want to keep learning and working in different roles. Perhaps it would be better to specialise but I find all aspects of sound design really fun, from dialogue to sound effects and mixing, so as long as I am learning and getting better at my cra, I'm up for it all. Ultimately, what's more im- portant to me is to be able to work on films that have a lot of heart. BMU supervising sound editor Grace Wong and director Steve Lawson
