So much emotion went into telling this story.
There was crying during research, crying during
concept meetings and, naturally, crying by the
cast and crew on set. The production provided
a therapist for anyone that needed counseling
to navigate the diculty in witnessing this sad
injustice that ended a child's life and the effects
upon his mother. Mamie's strength as a mother
is the primary inspiration that got me through
the entire process. Knowing that she was able to
dig deep inside of her soul to tell the world what
had happened while grieving her only child, took
immeasurable energy.
While writing this article, the Emmett Till
Antilynching Act was signed into law, finally
making lynching a federal hate crime. This is
encouraging and long overdue. Bringing the
past back to life through the art of filmmaking
underscores that America still faces similar
struggles. We still have a long way to go. ADG
