MT, I drove to the Fort Caspar construction site about an hour from town. There I found the production's steady, get-it-done construction coordinator Sammy Hammett and his dedicated and talented crew working in a blizzard—the wind was blowing fiercely and the snow was coming down sideways. In addition to working in extreme weather on an outdoor production, the days were long. The high Texas plains and Montana locations were remote and often hours from crew accommodations. The shooting schedule changed constantly and the pressure on the Art Department to meet deadlines was intense. As quoted in The New York Times, "In striving for authenticity, Sheridan and his team have pushed themselves to the limits." January 9, 2022 Now, as I write this, 1883 has premiered and episode four will air tonight. I'm proud of the show and the work of the Art Department. Our goal was to fulfill Taylor's vision and honestly depict the physical setting and realities experienced by those who set out from Fort Worth and crossed the high plains to Montana and Oregon. I think we pretty much succeeded in our commitment to historical accuracy, as reflected by my favorite uote of the show. For a flashback scene from the ivil War, we had recreated and matched the iconic Mathew Brady photograph from the Battle of Antietam. Tom Hanks, who was making a cameo appearance as the Union general, and Taylor were looking at the scene. I walked up and showed them the Brady photograph. Tom Hanks looked at the photograph and back at the scene and said, "Man, you're throwing deep!" Thanks, Tom. We were trying to throw deep and like I said, this has been my dream job. ADG D.
