prop team. Designing the robot, from its dress to its hair clip, reuired much eff ort. The beads and clip in her hair took the Squid Game symbols of circle, triangle and square to create the shape of a house. The idea was to reveal the eerie nature of the game where the players struggle in despair to go back home while Young-hee wears a house- shaped hair clip. The large-scale working robot's clothing was straight from the illustrations of Young-hee from textbooks in the 1970s-1980s. Those who spent their teenage years during the period would experience nostalgia in the appearance of this motion-sensing doll, and alarm as the players are shot to death by the friendly-looking Young-hee. Various attempts were made when designing the masks. At fi rst, I wanted the masks to have the smiling face of a mannequin but in a more human-like and hyper-realistic way, with a touch of Korean traditional masks. However, I reached the conclusion that since the masked characters play an important role in leading the nine-episode long show, they should be simple and intuitive, which is why the masks were designed to have an expressionless and impersonal look. Diverse types of masks were created using diff erent shapes and fi gures. In the end, I decided to take the design of a fencing mask for the sake of practicality and divided the hierarchy according to the number of vertices of each shape. The masks were also designed to have a distinctive look that only exists in the Squid Game world. ADG F. INITIAL DESIGNS FOR THE MASKED CHARACTERS. G. CONCEPT SKETCH FOR THE MAZE HALLWAYS.
