How the forest's infl uence was conveyed for each character in a subtle yet eff ective way is where I fi nd my professional sustenance. I love to write between the lines when I'm designing, creating my own backstories to share with set dec, paint, construction, props, etc. It's how I can bring all the other departments into the theatre that is my brain and see what I see. I am a storyteller, and designing worlds is my medium. ach of the main characters had a diff erent relationship with the forest which was conveyed in the worlds built for them. I tried to be as subtle as possible in the execution, as each character was aff ected diff erently. For Shauna, the vision of domesticity still has her feral huntress streak beneath the surface. The forest can be seen outside every window and in the subtle greens and botanic art in her house. With Taissa, the power broker who outwardly has left the past behind, I used a custom jungle mural from Tomek edynak of oland in her dining room and the overgrown garden in her backyard. I used strong colors, and the green of her o ce was meant to convey the forest inwardly infl uencing her current life, despite her outward declaration of having left it all behind. Natalie is the team fuck-up who, despite her shaky life, is probably the strongest of the bunch. She does not deny her trauma but rather uses it to propel her toward her goals, however messed up they may be. Natalie lives in an old roadside D E F E. TAISSA IN HER BROWNSTONE KITCHEN. PRODUCTION STILL BY KAILEY SCHWERMAN/ SHOWTIME. motel, a vagabond existence for which I used a deep forest-green carpet, which she often lies on like an ocean surrounding her. Despite its simplicity, there was defi nitely a sense of bygone romanticism to it, and the palette and patterns were meticulously thought out. I found it was uite sexy in its urban decay. As a forgotten highway motel, it really suited Natalie's nomadic, tragic, sexy story.
