THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2022 • 55 to brush and glue down her brows, then utilizing an eyebrow pencil to draw in single hairs which created an unruly and unkept look. I would draw individual mustache hairs on her which was referred as her "koi fish" look. One of my favorite looks for Maya was her theatrical look where I transformed her into a 40-year-old woman. I was inspired by Mrs. Robinson in the film The Graduate. I used stretch and stipple around her eyes to age her, gave her false lashes, angular brows, contour at the temples, jawline, below the cheekbone, and a sophisticated lip nude color. Anna Kone: Key Make-up Artist Alexandra French Anna's look was meant to be different than Maya's. She was a bit more girly but still off-putting. She often had extremely frosted eyeshadows and dark eyeliner. The use of highlight and shadow was used to mirror a youthful appearance. We found that "CLE" foundation was our go-to product creating the best coverage for her. Individual eyebrow hairs were glued down around her natu - ral eyebrows, giving her an unplucked feel. Using a mascara wand, we brushed her brow hairs in different directions to give a messy appearance. RMS blush was used on the apples of her cheeks and her nose. To really keep those '90s vibes alive, we loved Lip Smackers of all flavors. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our show came to a halt. With two weeks left and two years passed, we approached pick - ups. Adolescents had grown and aged. Such was my dilemma but thank you to an awesome team that finished in my absence. My deepest appreciation to Lindsay Garrison as my Department Head and Jenn Bennett as key make-up. Thank you to key artist Alexandra French, Gary Archer "dental technician and Special FX teeth creator" and a special thank you to all of the day play - ers who made the show possible: Lindsay Garrison, Michele Sweeney, Abigail Bradley, Seana Breh Chavez, Bianca Appice- Jarvis, April Fiske, Emilia Werynska and Alex Perrone. • LEARNING CURVE: PEN15 Set in the year 2000, Season 2 of PEN15 dives into the humiliation and discomfort of being a 13-year-old girl who doesn't quite fit in. In the first episode, best friends Maya Ishii-Peters and Anna Kone attend a pool party just two days after their first middle school dance. Putting real-life adults Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle in a group of 13- to 17-year-old kids was a small part of the humor that made this show so special. Maya asked me to be Department Head Make-up for Season 1. I knew this show would touch the hearts of many people. During our preproduction meetings, the table became fun and comical as we found ourselves reliving our teen years. My team and I went through old photos of ourselves, and searched '90s celebrity make-up looks, hair and fashion. During filming, the team filled the walls with '90s celebrity inspiration and listened to '90s music. I brought on Alexandra French as my key make-up artist as she brought a unique spin and make-up ideas. We felt we nailed down the final look for each character to recreate the '90s. Alex was in charge of completing Anna's look and I was in charge of executing Maya's. Maya and Anna are credited as writers, producers, directors, and lead actresses. They had a vision, and knew exactly what they wanted from the start. They didn't want to come off looking "campy." We wanted their look to be as realistic as possible and we went through many make-up tests before we finally got it right. In Season 2, there were many more theatrical and out-of-the kit type make-ups which was fun, stepping outside the comfort zone of what we did in Season 1. The two girls had what they referred to as their "everyday look." Maya Ishii-Peters: Department Head Make-up Michelle Miller I wanted Maya's everyday look to be a girl who was not exactly popu- lar, tried really hard to apply her make-up, but never quite looked right. It's a challenge to purposely do a bad job on a beauty make- up. It goes against everything we are taught as make-up artists. I executed highlight and shadow to make Maya's face appear rounder and more youthful.
