THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2022 • 17 THE BITTER TASTE OF CANDY I have a lifelong obsession with true crime, and an unending fascina- tion with the culture and countercultures that stemmed from the '60s, '70s, and early '80s, so when I heard about the series Candy, I immediately dove into research materials about the story, including John Bloom & Jim Atkinson's book, Evidence of Love. I continued my research off and on in the months leading up to the project. I received the scripts later on in the year which were written by our showrunner, Robin Veith. They were some of the best scripts I've ever had the pleasure of reading and I am her no. 1 fan. Robin had me over the moon from the moment that I read references to David Lynch's Twin Peaks in the tone notes as she compared the energy of the town to the monotony of Laura Palmer's ceiling fan, and she kept me completely immersed in the story the entire way through. Candy is set in Wylie, Texas, which is a fairly small town, and the B Y K A T I E B A L L A R D D E P A R T M E N T H E A D H A I R majority of our characters were conservative, church-going folks. Our story spans two years, 1978-1980, and in an effort to convey their conservative nature, and lack of big-city influence, we chose to keep our styles slightly dated. You won't see any '80s trends, but rather, styles more reminiscent of the mid-1970s. Jessica Biel's wig was the first creation, and the details incorporated by our wigmaker, Stacey Butterworth, were a major part of its success. The fine hair that Stacey used allowed us to maintain a proportionate silhouette, and resulted in a very soft, touchable texture that could either be set on rollers for her permed look, or blown out and curled into her more conservative courtroom style, all while maintaining a realistic silhouette. Jessica also has a heart-shaped hairline that trans- lates well into a unique and delicate looking front, which is just one of the many details that we were able to showcase as a way to ensure that things stayed looking as realistic and natural as possible. To create Jessica's iconic candy curls, I first blocked the wig on a long neck wig block that had been prepped with her head form. When styling, I avoid pinning the front and instead do two rows of glass head pins just behind the hairline, to preserve the very delicate lace that the wig has been fronted with. I would then wet the piece down, spray the root with Kevin Murphy's 'ever bounce' spray, the ends with Kevin Murphy's 'staying alive' leave-in conditioner spray, and gently comb through.
