22 • LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2022 MUSTŠSEE PLACE: The funicular ride in Tomi´ceva Street. A cultural monument, it was built in 1890 and it has been in operation since 1893. Connecting Zagreb's Upper and Lower Town at 66 meters long, it's the shortest funicular in the world! FAVORITE SHOP: Dolac Marketplace. Established in 1930 and located in the heart of Zagreb, this famed market with its trademark red umbrellas is where people can buy fresh meat, flowers and produce, talk and enjoy their morning coff ee. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Špajza Bistro is great hidden gem. It is a small, unpretentious restaurant, with tasty homemade food, with vegetarian and meat options that looks and tastes like lunch at your mom's and at a good price. Try octopus or tuna if you're a vegetarian, and there are great burgers if you're more of a meat person. PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: Zrinjevac Park, any time of the year. Just around the corner from the central square, Zrinjevac Park is one of the most romantic places in Zagreb. This stunning green space is lovely to walk along, especially at night when the walkways are all lit up and there is plenty of seating to enjoy the park. It also has a music pavilion which has served as an open-air concert stage since the 19th century. BEST DAY TRIP: It's a toss-up between Samobor town or Medvednica Mountain. Samobor is a delightful little town rich with Baroque architecture located only about 25km away from the centre of Zagreb. The centre of Samobor is at King Tomislav Square—the vibrant main square lined with beautiful buildings and numerous cafes where you can sit down over a cup of coff ee and sample a famous local cream cake—kremšnita. Over the centuries, Samobor has also been celebrated for its craft makers and artisans involved in the production of clothing, hats, leather items, crystal items and more. Samobor is surrounded by the Nature Park Žumberak—Samoborsko Gorje Hill Range and is very popular with hikers and cyclists. One of Zagreb's unique features is having Medvednica Nature Park at its doorstep. You can see those majestic green hills from any corner of the city. Medvednica Mountain guards Zagreb and has been a very popular excursion and hiking destination for more than 100 years. The nature park covers nearly 70 square miles and is crisscrossed with hiking trails and mountain huts known for excellent home cooked food and great view. FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: Trešnjevka. My go-to place for sentimen- tal reasons mostly. It's a blue-collar lively neighbourhood with a nice balence of post- WWII architecture. It's been gentrifying over the years and has a great mix of cool bars, bistros and vintage shops. It wouldn't be my fi rst choice for shooting as it's not the most easiest part of the city to control, but last year I did almost all exteriors for a Croa- tian fi lm during the summer and it was great fun. Trešnjevka's most pronounced ar- chitectural feature is Pele's Private Tour the grid of narrow alleyways that spreads north of Ozaljska, each overlooked by two- storey houses with small private gardens. FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: Lunar (Slaven Lunar Kosanovi), graphic designer and graffi ti artist. Lunar is one of the fi rst, most recognisable and beloved graffi ti artists in Croatia. Many of his colourful works feature his street cat motifs. BEST BAR/CLUB: Museum Katran—This is the most unique club in Zagreb. Just fi ve minutes from city centre, it's not easy to fi nd, but it is always full (from 1 till 5 am), has four floors, good music and interesting people. It's in an old factory and there is nothing fancy about it, but it is great for people who love cool, alternative places. BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: Hala V in the summertime—the newly renovated event space of the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum is popular for events and concerts. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: The view from from Lotršˇcak Tower in the Gornji Grad city area. Lotršˇcak Tower was built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the south city gate. You can climb to the top for a 360-degree view of the city. A canon is fi red from the tower at noon to mark the hour. Downtown Zagreb Hub Cooltura
