4 • LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2022 L E T T E R FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR MEMBERS, I'm writing this on the redeye heading back home to Toronto from Los Angeles—where our successful joint event with Image Locations at the historic Beverly House attracted a huge turnout of LMGI members and invited industry guests. We came to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Godfather by touring the exterior location of the iconic "horse head" scene fi lmed at this 1920's palatial Beverly Hills villa once owned by newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. I was so happy watching as everyone gathered on the expansive veranda overlooking the big, beautiful pool to sip cocktails, sample the buff et and enjoy the beautiful sunny day together and IN PERSON! It's been too long since we've been able to meet like this, and we now appreciate so much more what we once took for granted. As a group, we are resilient. We learned to adjust to how the world changed over the past two years. As location professionals, we've always been able to do that — we know how to adapt and move forward. I'm inspired by one of my favorite lines of dialogue from The West Wing: "Every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless." That is who we are, that is what we do and that makes me proud to be one of us —and seeing us together at this event made me even prouder to be your elected president. After the LMGI's sustained campaign for location professionals to become members of the TV Academy, this year the producers welcomed us to join their branch—which means that we are now recognized by members of the creative television community for what we do—and we get to vote for the Emmys! The LMGI Awards Show has been moved to August 27, designed to take place before the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 12. This makes us the only guild awards show being held in the middle of Emmy Season. This is a potential windfall of industry attention and support, well beyond anything we've experienced before. By you becoming a voting member of the Television Academy, the more influence we have as a group. Over 100 LMGI members have already applied to become members and we don't know when the producers' branch will 'close the door' on this opportunity. Apply now and expand the influence of location managers and scouts working in television. In numbers there is strength. Perhaps one day, we may even have our own voting branch within the Academy! Our own LMGI Awards also need you. This year's voting process will involve two rounds of voting. The fi rst will narrow down a wide fi eld of contenders to fi ve or six fi nalists in each category. Another vote will determine the winners. More than anything, your participation shows our colleagues that an LMGI Award is the highest of honors and the most coveted award that a location professional can receive. We are planning an in-person gala event for our 9th Annual LMGI Awards Show 2022 and you won't want to miss it—Save the August 27 date! Membership participation is always key to keeping this organization vital and relevant. Volunteer on one of our many committees, run for the Board, write for the Compass, help recruit new members, attend events. The LMGI community strives to be diverse and inclusive. Our foundation is solid, and our ever-expanding global community of location professionals is strong. The LMGI is a success story. We have achieved many of our founding goals and have many reasons to celebrate. But we must remember that success is not the fi nal destination but a starting point, and that our capacity is truly limitless!
