N E W S N EWBURY, UK — At the IBC show in Amsterdam last month, prod- ucts featuring stereoscopic 3D tools were ever ywhere, and the Quantel stand was no exception. The company demo'd its Stereo3D server, which is based on Quantel's existing sQ server platform and supports realtime ingest and playout of multiple channels of stereo HD content under the control of Quantel's own sQ Record and sQ Play apps. "This Stereo3D server is just one of the components needed for the complete Stereo3D production chain, which we're committed to delivering in the ver y near future — right when the industr y is going to need it," said Steve Owen, Quantel di- rector of marketing. Quantel also talked up stereo at their press event, which had 3ality's founder/CEO Steve Schklair discussing how the two com- panies have par tnered on 3ality's 3flex SIP2100 stereo image processor, which fea- tures fix-it tools that correct most of the common stereo 3D faults, and works easily with Quantel's Pablo. Schklair said the SIP2100 will provide "great 3D stereo that doesn't cause headaches and is a pleasure to watch." Quantel is also suppor ting Red camera r3d files on eQ, iQ and Pablo. Key features of the Quantel r3d implementation include pre- viewing of r3d files before importing — en- abling shot selection and speeding workflow; par tial file impor t — only chosen clips are imported by simply setting in and out points; impor t at 4K, 2K or 1K resolution (full, half and quar ter rez) with different quality op- tions; and full use of all Red options, including exposure, colorspace and color temperature. Quantel also introduced a new option called soft Sam which brings connectivity and workflow boosts to owners of standalone Quantel eQ, iQ and Pablo. It allows third- par ty systems transparent access to the Quantel disk store. This means Quantel users can employ other tools and media from all sorts of different apps within a project with- out the need to move or copy media — sav- ing time and speeding up workflow. And finally, Quantel demonstrated a new anamorphic digital cinematography workflow on Quantel post systems that exploits Arri's new Mscope anamorphic digital acquisition mode.
